Made in Queens
Gothic Cabinet Craft, which built the new book/LP/CD cases I posted about a little while ago, were profiled today in the New York Times. It's a local business, founded in a store that still exists (the one I visited to design the bookcases) at Third Avenue and Thirteenth Street. The factory is in Maspeth, it's still family-owned, and employs hundreds of local craftsmen. It's wonderful to be able to support a local business like that with such satisfying results. I'll probably be buying more from them in the future.

If they weren't so pricey, I'd have done the same when I was searching for first my loft bed and then my fold-out futon. If I could trade what I've got now for wood... and if I could have a full-sized loft bed??? OMG, that would be awesome.

Well, hopefully they'll be around for a while!

I love GCC so much! I've bought all my bookcases from them, as well as my old bar and bar stools, and my old kitchen table (which I got rid of to add another bookshelf). They deliver fast, their prices are a bit high but ok on sale, and of course everything you mentioned--local business owners, etc.

I remember back in 2001, I think shortly after 9/11, they had that huge fire at their main warehouse in Queens. I was really sad to see that on the news, because I had had such good stuff from them, and because businesses were hurting so much already and it just seemed unfair. I'm glad they are still flourishing :)

I am very glad I went with them, not only because they're a local business but also because they were a pleasure to work with and did a wonderful job.

How are you doing? Feeling better?
