Here's your "straight face" test... - Riffs and Licks
Here's your "straight face" test...
There's an arrogance in the scientific community that they know better than the average American.
-- Andrea Lafferty, executive director of the Traditional Values Coalition, in the New York Times today.
So which bridge do you want to walk across: the one I drew on the back of my placemat last night at the Hope and Anchor Diner, or the one designed by an engineer who thinks he knows better than the average American?

There's a good, scary story in the current (August?) issue of Discover about all the scientific studies under attack by organizations like the Traditional Values Coalition and their congressional flunkies. Studies like the one investigating the sexual habits of truck drivers, which the TVClike would denounce and simply sick, prurient and a waste of time, but which (they conveniently decline to mention) is aimed at learning how AIDS propogates through different subcultures with an eye toward figuring out how to curb transmission.

So, hmm, I think I'll take the engineer's bridge, thanks. :)

good point...

...yes. I know there's something wrong with statements like Lafferty's, and you've definitely hit the nail on the head.

Re: good point...

There's so much wrong with that bunch, it's hard to know where to start. But this struck me as just the height (or rather depth) of ignorance. We really are on our way back to the dark ages.
