This morning in Brooklyn Heights
I remember these grinder trucks from when I was a kid, and even then I didn't understand how they stayed in business. This guy was driving slowly down Hicks Street, holding his hand out the window to hit his bell slowly with what looked like a metal version of the drumstick with which you hit your toy drum when you were a kid.

What link? You don't see the photo?

No photo: only the text over a broken image graphic.

It's fixed. I do this every time I email-post to LJ, and every time it's a surprise. The pictures are private when they're emailed so I have to reset security for anyone but me to see them.

Great shot. (The post makes a lot more sense now.) I didn't think they made paint in that color green anymore—I bet it's 17 percent lead.

True! Although, if you spend your days bending over a grinding wheel breathing steel dust, lead paint is the least of your concerns. ("Mikey! Stop licking the fenders or you'll end up grinding scissors like your old man!")

Yes, that's right! Fast little bells like sleighbells? Good Humor Man, yay! Slow, single bell, like the one at school? Boo, sharpening man.

Is this the same sharpening service that drives the faded red truck(s) around, and will sharpen ice skates and knives? I remember them from when I was little and I always wondered who exactly used their services..

I think these guys are all independent operators. I took a picture of one of the faded red trucks last year.

The guy who drives the green truck above was profiled in the NY Times in January (TimesSelect subscription required). The truck is his father's, and he's been riding around in it since he was five years old.

Oh, okay. Awesome. It's almost really hard to believe that there's more than one knife-grinding operator in the same neighborhood(s). And that they both still get business!
